Rhyme Schemes
When writing lyrics that rhyme, it is important that the words flow. Rhyme scheme is simply the pattern by which a certain rhyme repeats. Here are a few basic rhyme schemes.
A / B / A / B
The first and third lines rhyme and the second and fourth lines rhyme.
Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Poems are read,
By people like you
A / B / C / B
To pity those that know her not
Is helped by the regret
That those who know her, know her less
The nearer her they get.
A / A / A / A
As i walked right down my street,
I felt a pain in both my feet,
My heart began to quickly beat,
And i started to sweat in the scorching heat.
Tips
Sometimes, you will come across a word that doesn’t rhyme with another. However, this might not always be a dead end. Sometimes (most of the time), there are other options that may not directly rhyme, but still sound good. For example:
Roses are red,
Violets are blue
Poems are best read,
While in a good mood.
Blue and Mood do not directly rhyme (like Blue and You, or Book and Took do), but the poem still flows well. The same thing applies to lyrics. Other words that don’t directly rhyme with blue but could still be used in a lyric intended to rhyme are shoes, tube, flute, duke, etc. The key thing to remember here is the vowel sound: as long as the word has an “oo” sound, the word should rhyme.
Coming up with a topic to write about may also be difficult. For inspiration, you can look around your environment for ideas. However, It is important to be original and creative when naming your songs. If you are writing a song about having a good day, do not name the song “A Good Day.” No matter how good the song may be, it’s just about guaranteed that nobody is going to want to listen to that song just by looking at the name. Instead, think about what happened that day that made it good. Maybe you kissed your boy / girlfriend for the first time. But even “First Kiss” is still a little bland. Where did you kiss? Why did you kiss? Who did you kiss? Maybe you kissed your boy / girlfriend on the beach at night because she was sad that her dog died, so you name your song “Within the Waves.” See? Much more interesting!
